Nyum ..... Nyum, Nyum, Nyum, Nyum, Nyum.
Luverly.
OK. before I start im going to state that i'm biased, I loved
this group well before i bought this album. I bought the first
album on a whim, i'd only ever heard one song on a irish late
night music programme (No Disco ???), and loved it. I noticed the
album the following week, bought it, and i've never looked back.
Famed for being the band fronted by Thom Yorke's younger
brother, Andy, the Unbelievable Truth are astonishing, ... really.
Critiscised a little for being slightly melancholy, and maybe duly
so, UT are very soothing ... but lets go for it one at a time.
1. Landslide - Pretty bassy at times, but a very good intro to
what turns out to be a great album.
Song Quote - "How can you come this far and never wish
them dead?"
2. A Name - ahhh, this is more like it, the UT of old, a
swaying, soothing little number.
Song Quote - "Sometimes i wonder, what would Jesus have
done? Made another stand and been crushed like a bug?"
3. Disarm - Love the drums here, does a typical, "oooh
another sweeping one" thing here, does lift a little.
Song Quote - "I don't need you to thank me, but i deserve
more than resentment. You're such a little child"
4. Pedestrian - Slightly chilling this one, strange, but still
melodic, you'll enjoy.
Song Quote - "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit
the earth, even if it means to get their hands dirty"
5. Home Again - Slightly C&W feel of this, almost straight
out of their first album
Song Quote - "I'm out of sync, and in these times i feel
most alive"
6. Daylight - Not quite sure whether this is very uplifting or
downright depressing, an amazing song, but strange
Song Quote - "Strange thing about this store, is the
locals are queueing for flights. I think'll go down there as well,
since i came here to see how they live"
7. Shed Your Skin - The most sombre, melancholy and depressing
song you'll have heard for a well (short of Portishead), give it
time and i think it'll be your favourite. And wait for the 2nd
chorus before even considering changing, the melody is
spine-chilling.
Song Quote - "Tomorrow you could be reborn, seize the
oppurtunity, maybe useless flesh always dragged you down"
8. Advice to a Lover - About as bouncy as UT get, probably one
of the lesser tracks, but still damn good
Song Quote - "Sometimes the feeling of utter contentment
gets too much, but to worry about it is the ultimate luxury."
9. Agony - This is about as heavy as UT get, and a
semi-title-track (you'll see what i mean), its excellent,
uplifting and genius
Song Quote - "Do i resist when you bring me bread, Am i
not tempted when you promise more, silence .. i like the sound of
it, If i keep it up, then will you let me go?"
10. Covers - Soothing is likely to be the most over-used word
in this review, so ill not bother changing it now, it is, its
soothing, luverly.
Song Quote - "I've been kicking back, i've been finding
distractions everywhere"
11. Hypnotist - Another building number, starts of very
minimalistic, and slowly fills the whole melody. Unsure if this is
a song of unrequited love, or obsession.
Song Quote - "Did i come to late, to foil that hypnotist,
I talked you down, i brought you home, i cleaned you up, but you
keep tugging, you keep tugging at the leash"
12. I Can't Wait - Almost sounds as if the lyrics and music are
out of sync, until you realise how much they compliment each
other.
Song Quote - "I can't wait to have you near again, and talk
about the things that we both went through"
13. Let it flow - With any luck the albums being ended the way
UT intend to go on, a varying number full of reflection,
resignment, and contrasted with hope.
Song Quote - "Give it time, maybe given time, there'll be
good things to look back on, when nostalgia strikes you'll be
surprised that part of you enjoyed it"
Conclusion - Im a firm believer that UT are one of the greatest
undiscovered talents in modern music, their style may not be to
everyone's tastes, but they're sheer genius and ability to evoke
emotion is undeniable. I hadn't listened to this album in a while,
and i've written this review while listening to it, and one thing
clicked while i was listening, this really is one of the greatest
albums of last year, better than Kid A, parachutes, and every
major album than i can recall, yet it was released to no hype, no
pre-ordering, and probably still hides away of music shop shelves
everywhere. I can offer only once piece of advice, and its
actually quite sad from a 20-21 year old male, but buy this album,
find a dark room, lie back and listen to this album twice, without
distractions. You'll never look back
