This is the
latest Jim Carrey film to be released and as usual it's a comedy.
The film follows the actions of stressed cop Charlie,
mild mannered, kind and always being walked over by the general public.
It doesn't stay this way though. His "other side" quickly
makes an appearance and quickly makes himself known.
Now diagnosed with schizophrenia (yes, that is the
correct spelling.), all he has to do is be sure he takes his medicine
even six hours. Enter Irene, a beautiful young woman on the run from the
mob. Charlie must escort her to New York safely and run to his home town
but in classic Hollywood style, it doesn't work that way. After losing
his medicine, Charlie's alter ego 'Hank' makes quite frequent and
unpredictable appearances, much to the viewers humour.
There are a lot of running jokes in this film, mainly
to do with Charlie's sons who pop up from time to time. Also, there is
plenty of dark humour, such as Carrey trying to humanely kill a cow by
snapping it's neck. Or running with a broken nose that whistle every
time he breathes.
Although quite funny in parts, it's not as funny as
film gone before like American Pie. The trouble with this film (apart
from receive nation condemnation from schizophrenia groups) is you're
never sure what way to take it. Is it a silly comedy like Scary Movie?
Or is it a "serious" comedy like American Pie? And that's its
downfall. It's too serious to be taken as a silly film and too silly to
be taken seriously. It's leaves the viewer wonder what to make of it,
not a good attribute to hold.
Despite this, it is funny and give you the odd laugh
here and there. If you already have seen Road Trip, then you might want
to try this.
