About October of last year, I
walked into a newsagents in Belfast Central Train Station. I noticed a magazine I'd never
set eyes on before and it really caught my eye because it had an array of cars drapped
over the front cover including Impreza's and Lancer's. This magazine was Evo and I have
not missed an issue since. To say a car is just for getting from A to B would be in total
disagreement of this publication. You'll not find a Ford Ka or a Nissan Micra in these
pages. The only cars that make it in here are what are known as "Driver's Cars",
cars which are literally fun and exhilerating to drive. And unlike other Car magazines I
could mention, it doesn't require naked women and illegal "cruises" to sell it's
copies. Neither does it contain features of some boy racer fiesta that's had so much spent
on it, you could have bought a proper performance car. This one is different. It strips
away all the unnecessary features of a car like economy, styling, upgrades and just
focuses on the raw emotive force of driving. Now you're probably thinking, that's
nonsence, how can there be a difference in cars? Cars are like films. You get a few good
ones that aren't that expensive and a few bad one that are ridiculously expensive. For
instance, would you rather drive for a day, if you will an Austin Allegro or a Ferrari
F360 spider? Now before you point out the obvious, yes one is expensive but worth it. Now
say, would you rather a 205 GTI 1.9 or Ford Capri 3.0i for a day? Both valued the same,
and if you knew your cars you'd know the Capri was a poser's car with little
drivebility.
That's what this magazine is about. Not the cost of a car, just the sheer joy of driving
it.
Back to the magazine itself, it does contain many news articles to keep
you up to date on world and sport issues, new models due for release, an extensive
database of all the cars, past and present they have reviewed, an update on the writer's
and editor's own pride and joy's, a second hand guide devoted to a bygone car, and what
the magazine got an award for, the driving tests. No, not "carry on up the street and
take a left", its when the writers test drive a collection of simular cars and test
them to see which is the best one. For example, the first issue I bought had 4 wheel drive
cars to determine which was the best. Last issue was to find the best super car. And the
finally the best thing about it is, they allow the reader his or her own opinion on
whatever issue without the normal "Bog off" answer of immature magazines.
So if you are interested in cars, and more importantly driving, then
look no further. If however, you like looking at cars with airfix kits stuck to them and
rough women pulling up their tops, then move on please.
