Welcome to the Kantares IV, home of Ian Dresaris.
If you played any of the other Mechwarrior games this is all the intro
you'll need, this title doesn't vary much from its predecessors, bar the
setting, but it has improved graphically, and reputably has a much
improved multiplayer feature (i haven't tried it yet). Bar, those if
you've played one of the previous games just go straight for the cockpit,
and whup some metal ass.
The story so far:
You play Ian Dresaris, Prince of Kentares, however while you were away,
your father formed an allegiance, who turned round and killed him and the
rest of your family (the dirty swines). So, as the title suggests,
vengance, and reclaiming your rightful position are the name of the game.
Kick some ass, recruit some lancemates, and rain some revolution and civil
war action on Kantares IV.
The game:
Mechwarriors are Mechanical Warriors (duh!!!), vaguely humanoid
mechanical monstrosities, between 5 and 13 metres tall, heavily laden with
armor and excessively large numbers of lasers, missile launchers, machine
guns and great big bloody guns. Sounds good.
So where do we go from here? We configure our mechs, getting as many
weapons as bloody well possible on board (paying atention to heat build
up, weight, and speed), leap in, and follow some orders.
The format is pretty standard, progress through linear missions, set in
progressively tougher environments, gathering up as many salvageable
weapons and better mechs as you can, along with some buddies to use whats
left over. Keep going until the final free for all where you get to kill
all the big badguys (also in mechs, every man and his dog has one on this
planet!!).
Summary:
It ain't bad, and granted i still have to try the multiplayer section,
but its a little to samey for me, having played 2 of the previous 3,
saying that its a proven format, and its always sold well, i just get the
feeling someone said, improve the graphics, give it a new story and throw
it out there.Plus, its a little short, i was on the final mission after 3
days.
All in all, if you've never played any of the games in the series, buy
it, you'll love it, if you have, then don't go in expecting too much, its
a good game, but you may be safer replaying your older copy than forking
out £30 for this one.
